Croatia Part 4: Krka National Park, June 12, 2012

June 27, 2012

After leaving the isle of Vis, we rented a car from Split and hit the road again.  An hour or two later we hit our destination: Krka National Park for a day of hiking.

While all the paths were beautiful, the centrepiece of Krka is a large waterfall (or “slap”, one of the two Croatian words I learned this trip.  Sadly, the second word is for bakery).  We enjoyed a swim amongst the slap.

John got a waterproof camera for the trip… and discovered some special effects… not that this waterfall needed any digital retouching!

While the waterfall was magnificent, we tired of the crowds (yes, we finally encountered crowds on our trip!) and hit the road for a less travelled section of the park.

I suppose not everyone enjoys climbing 500+ stairs, but we were sure glad we did, and got this view all to ourselves:

We timed things perfectly and we just made it to our car to hit the road again when the rain started.  We made really good use of our GPS during this trip (thanks Tom Tom!).  Since we had time, we asked Tom Tom to avoid toll roads and he took us on some pretty tiny dirt roads- but to his credit never led us astray… but did lead us into Croatian rush hour at one point:

What are the white/orange things in the waterfall picture? Looks like a necklace of buoys – was this sectioning off the pool or preventing you from going over the waterfall???
